A little insight into the person behind the camera.

written by Thomas Val;le-Guatemala

About 7 days before the first performance hits the stage, I get this call form my friend, fellow songwriter and client Angela Easterling and she asks me if I can shoot video footage of her performing at the Kodak Theatre by the fountains on Friday.  With all the madness of getting things ready for the show and it was approaching Labor Day weekend, she had also mentioned if I was too busy that she could find someone else, but she really wanted me to do it, because i've done all her other videos as well.  So, i said "Yeah, why not"

I get there about 30 minutes before showtime and head over to Starbucks.  While in line, someone taps on my shoulder and asks "Are you Thomas?".  I say yup and he introduces himself as Jeff, and that he'll be shooting video also.  No problem.   The more the merrier.

Anyways, I'm filming Angela and her set (which you'll probably catch online in November) and I notice that this guy Jeff is doing what a lot of videographers & cameramen don't usually do so much of anymore, and thats's Go For The Shot....  He's moving around and I can tell he's looking for something unique for each song, and thats a blessing, because I usually shoot that way in a 1 camera operation to create the 3+ camera editing effect.  Not too complicated, but fun to edit down 3 or 4 videos and watch.

The reason I mention all of this is because for a month or two before the performance, I knew I would be handling the lighting and audio chores for the show, as well as last-minute adjustments all-around, and definately would not have time to shoot much footage, if any.  With the dates changed from late August to after Labor Day weekend, my regular camera persons on booked assignments and Sandy, my lighting person off to London on the day of the show, I explained to Jeff the situation of the 5 performances and he took on my challenge, with much passion and enthusiasm.

I just want to extend a huge Thank You to Jeff for his time and pulling off a lot of great footage of the performance and the behind-the-scenes.  From the beginning, it was really difficult expressing what I saw in my head.  Although, it got easier to explain, not too many people could 'visualize' it still.  He came in and started at a moment of chaos.  He would walk up to me and ask "why?" at certain technical decisions and I would explain to him my reasons, and he understood.  Within the 5 performances, he genuinely could see what I was going for, and so, he surmised it and he captured it.

    Thanks again Jeff!!!
